The modern accounting services industry is becoming increasingly demanding. Client expectations are rising, competition is intensifying, and technology – especially artificial intelligence – is transforming the way we work. In such an environment, competence and reliability are more important than ever.

This is precisely why it is worth asking whether an accountant holds the Level 6 Senior Accountant professional qualification. It is not just a document but a quality mark that elevates the standard and credibility of accounting services.

The meaning and content of the qualification

The Level 6 Senior Accountant qualification is based on the occupational standard established by the Estonian Association of Accountants, describing the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required for the role. It covers financial, managerial and tax accounting, reporting, budgeting, and advisory work. Applying for the certificate requires practical work experience and professional training.

Why it is important

The professional qualification is not merely a formality – it is proof of professional competence that:

  • increases credibility in the eyes of clients and employers;
  • expands career opportunities and enables higher remuneration;
  • ensures international recognition, as it aligns with the European Qualifications Framework;
  • supports ongoing professional development by keeping skills up to date.

In addition, the qualification is a prerequisite for applying for the quality mark of a recognised accounting service provider issued by the Estonian Association of Accountants, which enhances a company’s reputation and competitiveness.

Impact on accounting services

A certified Level 6 Senior Accountant is capable of providing:

  • accurate and reliable accounting that complies with laws and guidelines;
  • independent and analytical advice that helps clients make better decisions;
  • effective internal controls and risk management, reducing the risk of errors and fraud;
  • the ability to implement new technologies, including AI, to automate accounting processes.

The qualification as a response to professional reform and AI development

The Estonian Association of Accountants has highlighted that the professional qualification helps accountants maintain their professional level even in the era of artificial intelligence. At the seminar held on 27 May 2025, the role of AI in partially fulfilling an accountant’s tasks in the future was discussed. Nonetheless, the qualification remains an important indicator of professional competence.

In summary

The Level 6 Senior Accountant qualification is an investment in the future – it enhances the quality of accounting services, strengthens professional credibility, and helps accountants adapt to changing conditions. It is not just a certificate proving the completion of an exam but a strategic tool that shapes an accountant’s role and value within an organisation and in the wider economy.

My experience

I obtained the Level 6 Senior Accountant qualification in the autumn of 2024. This experience has increased my confidence and awareness in providing professional accounting services. Naturally, the additional training broadened my knowledge and gave me valuable insights into how to better understand clients and their businesses, how to listen to them attentively, and how to guide them in today’s rapidly changing environment. Preparing for and taking the exam felt like a mental workout that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Earning the qualification proved to me that I am doing the right thing – and doing it with heart!

The results of the autumn examination session were published a few weeks ago, and Grant Thornton Baltic is delighted to welcome two more colleagues who have successfully obtained the Level 6 Senior Accountant qualification. This is an important step in strengthening both the quality of our services and the competence of our team.

The next opportunity to take the Level 6 exam will be in May 2026.
