We continue to contribute to Estonia’s national defence

Protecting Estonia is not solely the responsibility of the Estonian Defence Forces. Every individual and organisation can contribute to strengthening Estonia’s defence capability, and this is something we actively do at Grant Thornton Baltic.

“More than 170 people work for us in Estonia. Among them are reservists who regularly participate in refresher training exercises. We maintain our colleagues’ full salary during these exercises because we see it as a valuable opportunity to support our employees by ensuring continuity of income while also contributing to Estonia’s national defence,” said Mati Nõmmiste, Managing Partner of Grant Thornton Baltic.

According to Janar Kukke, Senior Consultant in our Audit team, participating in refresher training exercises is a way to contribute to Estonia’s security while also developing himself in a completely different environment.

“I have found that these exercises provide valuable skills as well as a strong sense of teamwork. I greatly appreciate that Grant Thornton Baltic supports this commitment, allowing me to focus on the training without worrying about my income,” said Janar Kukke.

We are grateful that Grant Thornton Baltic’s contribution has been recognised at the highest level. Both last year and this year, we received the “Supporter of national defence” recognition from the Estonian Ministry of Defence.

Supporter of national defence 2026The Ministry of Defence introduced the recognition in 2023 to highlight exemplary companies, employers and organisations that support Estonia’s national defenders and thereby make a significant contribution to Estonia’s national defence.

This year, the recognition was awarded at three levels: gold, silver and bronze. A total of 527 Estonian employers received the recognition, including 10 gold-level, 100 silver-level and 417 bronze-level recipients.

Grant Thornton Baltic received the bronze-level recognition. One of the criteria for receiving this recognition is supporting employees’ participation in refresher training exercises by maintaining full salary, providing additional compensation or paid leave, or covering the difference between salary and the state allowance.

Together, we stand for Estonia.
