Grant Thornton Baltic continues to support cancer treatment foundation “The Gift of Life”

Each year about 8000 people in Estonia are diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately the Health Insurance Fund is unable to pay for care in the case of some of these men, women and children. Fortunately, many of them have been assisted by the Hille Tänavsuu cancer treatment foundation “The Gift of Life”, which channels donations to pay the medical bills of many in need. Grant Thornton Baltic is one of the supporters of the foundation.

Kingitud elu 350x350.png“Helping those in need is self-evident for us,” said Grant Thornton Baltic partner and sworn auditor Mart Nõmper. “We have supported the Hille Tänavsuu foundation since 2019 in a number of ways. For example, our employees have donated to the foundation sums that they received from the company as a birthday gift. “This year we took a step forward. We audited the fund's annual report for 2020 and donated the remuneration received for the work to the fund,” explained Mart Nõmper, partner and sworn auditor of Grant Thornton Baltic.

Nõmper said he was touched by how many people and organisations have reached out a helping hand to cancer patients: the audited report shows that electronically alone, 111,630 different donations were received in 2020 and there were around 8000 regular donors by year's end. Last year, 167 Estonians received support from the foundation – a total of 2.7 million euros.

The founder and board member of the foundation, Toivo Tänavsuu, said that in addition to cancer care, the foundation has another goal – to “heal” Estonian society. “We want to open donors’ hearts and get them to root for people who they don’t know personally. Over the years, the foundation has become like a popular movement with tens of thousands of supporters and which tries to make sure that no one in Estonia is deprived of timely and essential cancer treatment.”

A founder, partner and sworn auditor of Grant Thornton Baltic, Mati Nõmmiste, said that Grant Thornton plans to continue to support the foundation. “In the current health-related crisis, it’s especially important to notice people who need help and support them – whether it’s with money, volunteering or both.”
